Mount’s Clay & Franklin’s Corpe Headline All-HCAC Football Selections

GREENWOOD, IN – Franklin Collegeled the conference with 12 players on the 2012 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team, including the conference’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.  Franklin’s Zack Corpe (Granger, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) has been named the HCAC Defiance Most Valuable Player for the first time, while Mount St. Joseph’s James Clay (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) picked up the HCAC Offensive Most Valuable Player award. 

 

Manchester’s Kyle Evans (Winamac, Ind./West Central) was honored as Special Teams Most Valuable Player for the second straight season, while MU head coach Shannon Griffith garnered Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career.

 

BlufftonUniversity’s Calib Alexander (Ocala, Fla./St. John Lutheran) and Franklin College’s Keaton Lyons (Rensselaer, Ind./Central) were also named Co-Freshman of the Year for their efforts this fall.

 

Clay, a senior running back for the Lions, rushed for 2,124 yards this season to lead all NCAA divisions.  The senior averaged 212.4 yards per game, while amassing 21 rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores.  During conference play, Clay averaged a HCAC-record 220.2 rushing yards per contest and crossed the goal line 17 times.  The Louisville native crossed the 200-yard mark rushing eight times in ten games, including a conference-record 342-yard performance against Anderson.

 

Corpe, a junior defensive back for Franklin, led the Grizzlies defense in a quest for a HCAC title this season.  The junior led the conference with seven interceptions and 13 passes defended.  Corpe also contributed 57 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles this season.  As a team, Franklin led the HCAC in total defense (294.7 ypg) and scoring defense (18.6 ppg).

 

Evans, a senior kicker and punter for Manchester, scored 48 points for the Spartans this season.  The senior converted five-of-seven field goals and 33-of-35 extra points this fall, averaging 4.8 points per game.  Evans booted 50 punts for a 39.4 yards per punt average and placed 15 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line. 

 

Alexander, a freshman running back and kick returner for Bluffton, played in all 10 games for the Beavers this season.  The freshman totaled 445 yards rushing, 189 yards receiving, and five touchdowns this fall.  He also added 302 kickoff return yards.  Lyons, a freshman outside linebacker for Franklin, played in eight games for the Grizzlies and led the team with 11.5 tackles for loss.  Lyons added six sacks, two rumble recoveries, and 39 tackles his rookie season.

 

ManchesterUniversityhead coach Shannon Griffith has been selected as the HCAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.  He guided the Spartans to their first winning season since 1997 and finished second in the HCAC standings with a 6-2 league mark.  Manchester closed the season with six straight wins, including a 38-0 triumph over rival Anderson.
