Ferrum Tops Shenandoah
WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Ferrum College used a strong second half ground attack on its way to a 14-7 non-conference football victory over host Shenandoah.
In the first non-league game between the two former USA South Conference rivals, Ferrum (1-1) gained 143 of its 173 rushing yards in the final 30 minutes of play.
The Panthers were held to just 30 yards rushing in the first half as they and SU (1-1) played a scoreless 30 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium crowd, FC scored on its initial drive of the third period, moving the ball 74 yards in eight plays, before converting a Shenandoah interception into what proved to be the game-winning score with 3:49 to play in the third.
Wide receiver Derrick West hauled in a 21-yard floater from QB Tim Reynolds, outjumping Brandon Martin for the game-winner.
The Hornets took advantage of a Ferrum fumble to drive 30 yards in seven plays at the 10:36 mark of the fourth to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Shenandoah got the ball back just one more time, with 5:28 remaining, and turned the ball over on downs on its own 40.
FC then ran out the clock to secure its 14th victory in 17 lifetime meetings with the Hornets.
West led the victors with 95 yards receiving on five catches.
Carl Joseph had 67 yards rushing on 18 carries for the hosts.
Defensively, Josh Rogers had 13 tackles and Nick Erdman 10 for SU.
Shenandoah hosts another former USA South Conference rival, Christopher Newport, next Saturday night at 7:00.
