More news about: Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head football coach Chris Rusiewicz announced the intention of six incoming students to play football for the Quakers Monday. The students have made their deposits to the college and will enroll for classes beginning in August. They are the first commitments of Rusiewicz's third recruiting class at Guilford.

Kemar Bachelor (Greensboro, N.C.) lettered three seasons at Southern Guilford High School for coach Darryl Brown. The 5-8, 245-pound offensive lineman was a three-time All-Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference selection and twice helped the Storm to league titles. Bachelor was Southern Guilford's top lineman and centered the team, which ran for 4,554 yards and set the school's scoring record in 2012. He was named to the News & Record's Second Team All-Area squad and the 2012 CarolinaPreps.com 3A All-State Team. Bachelor intends to study exercise and sport sciences at Guilford.

Corbin Barwick (Kernersville, N.C.) lettered three seasons under Guilford alumnus Aldine Payne '85 at Robert B. Glenn High School. The 6-5, 290-pound offensive lineman twice earned All-Piedmont Triad 4A Conference honors and captained the team as a senior. He was named the team's best offensive lineman and also lettered two seasons as a defender on Glenn's first two lacrosse teams. Barwick intends to major in sport management at Guilford.

Pat Charvat (Winterville, N.C.) lettered four seasons under coach Timothy Carter at South Central High School. The 6-1, 295-pound defensive lineman twice earned First Team All-Pitt County recognition and has been chosen for the 2013 North Carolina Coaches' Association East-West All-Star Game in July. Charvat was named South Central's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2011 and played on South Central's 2010 Coastal Conference championship team. He plans to major in sport management at Guilford.

Josh Jurgevich (Haw River, N.C.) lettered three seasons for coach John Kirby at Eastern Alamance High School. The 6-0, 175-pound running back rushed for 1,297 yards and scored 14 touchdowns as a senior, which helped the Eagles reach the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A playoffs. Jurgevich earned All-Mid-State Conference recognition and is a three-time academic all-conference selection. His uncle, Fred Pagac, played two seasons in the National Football League and is linebackers coach for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. Jurgevich intends to study exercise and sport sciences at Guilford.

Reese Setzer (Sanford, N.C.) lettered two seasons at Lee County High School for coach Burton Cates. The 6-1, 260-pound center shared the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player Award and was an honorable mention All-Tri 9 Conference selection. He twice earned academic all-conference recognition and helped Lee County to its best record in 30 seasons (9-4) as a senior. Setzer also lettered in baseball and golf and is a member of the National Honor Society. He intends to study sport management at Guilford.

Derrick Westfall (Winston-Salem, N.C.) lettered twice with Barwick and Cline at Glenn High School. He was named the Bulldogs' Most Dedicated Player in 2012 and earned All-Piedmont Triad 4A Conference honors as a junior. A member of the National Honor Society, Westfall has been part of the Crosby Scholars program since 2006 and is a regular on the school's A-B Honor Roll.

Guilford opens the 2013 season Sept. 7 against Greensboro College in the Gate City Soup Bowl at 1:00 p.m.
